What are dental implants and how do they work?

Dr. Bobby Chhoker

Tooth loss can be an embarrassing situation to find yourself as an adult, however, you can rest assured that you are not alone. A significant percentage of adults over the age of 40 have lost at least one of their adult teeth, and this usually occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene and avoiding the dentist. A good oral hygiene routine instilled into us from an early age is important for good oral health and overall well-being. By visiting your dentist on a regular basis you are able to make sure that your oral hygiene routine is sufficient and effective, but also that any dental issues are treated successfully before they can have much effect on your teeth and gums.

Do not avoid the dentist

If you have avoided the dentist in the past and have now lost a tooth or teeth, either as a result of poor oral hygiene or another situation like an accident or injury which may have caused trauma to your mouth, then contact our practice today. With over 30 years of experience, Dr Bobby Chhoker is a master dental surgeon and can offer full dental services to address all your dental needs. By avoiding the dentist any longer you will create further complications for yourself including bone decay, which can then limit your treatment options and also affect the health of your surrounding teeth.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a highly popular and permanent method of addressing your missing teeth. In the last three decades Dr Bobby Chhoker has carried out around ten thousand dental implants, so speak to us and find out more about dental implants today.

Dental implants are small titanium components which act as replacements for the roots of your missing teeth. They are placed into the bone socket of your missing tooth, where a small hole will be drilled to make sure the implant is securely placed into the correct position. Once the implant is inserted into the bone socket, the titanium initiates a natural process known as osseointegration, which encourages bone cells to form around the implant, so that it is fixed permanently inside your jaw. This is a natural process, requiring sufficient healthy bone to begin with and once the process begins it may take several weeks for complete healing. In the meantime, you will visit us at regular intervals to ensure that the process is coming along successfully. This can take several months but varies from person to person.

Once the implant is successfully integrated into your jaw then you will be ready to complete the procedure. An abutment will be attached to the implant to which a crown can be fixed securely and permanently to replace your missing tooth. With good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist, dental implants are a long-lasting solution to missing teeth, which allows you to enjoy the full and efficient functioning of your mouth. They look and feel like your natural teeth so that you have a healthy and beautiful smile for a very long time.
