The development of dental implants over the years

Dr. Bobby Chhoker

Dental implants belong to a field of dentistry which has been carried out in different forms for thousands of years. Over the last few decades dental implant surgery has been significantly modernised and with much research and development it has become one of the most popular methods of replacing missing teeth. Dental implants are now the gold standard in tooth replacement therapy.

Modern-day dental implants work using a natural process known as osseointegration. The discovery of osseointegration was made in the 1950s by Dr Branemark, a Swedish orthopaedic surgeon who was studying bone healing and regeneration. Since the first successful dental implant surgery was carried out on a human volunteer in 1965, the last few decades have seen a surge in demand and popularity for dental implants to replace missing teeth, hence more and more dentists are becoming trained in dental implant surgery. If you are considering dental implants then speak to us and book an appointment with Dr Bobby Chhoker, who has over 20 years of implant experience and carries out dental implant surgery at our practice.

Dental implants are small titanium screws which are inserted into the bone socket of your missing tooth. They are designed to replace the root of your missing tooth and provide a permanent solution for tooth replacement which, with good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist, can last for the rest of your life.

Titanium is one of the strongest metals in the world and is biocompatible, which is why it is used for biomedical implants throughout the body. This means that it initiates a cellular response. For dental implants, when inserted into the alveolar bone of the jaw, titanium initiates the formation of osteoblasts around it, so that over a certain period of time it is firmly embedded into the jaw and becomes a permanent fixture of the mouth.

With over 20 years of experience in dental implantation, you need to book an appointment at our dental practice to find out more about dental implants for you. Firstly you need to undergo a thorough examination of your teeth and gums to make sure that there are no underlying dental issues. If there are things to be resolved, then these will need to be addressed prior to dental implant surgery. You will undergo an X-ray to make sure that you have sufficient healthy bone to hold the dental implant in place and if not you will need to have bone grafting to ensure dental implant surgery is successful for you. Once you are ready for the surgery, the implant will be placed into your jawbone and it will take approximately 3 to 4 months for successful osseointegration to take place, after which you are ready to have a custom-made crown, bridge or set of dentures to replace your missing teeth permanently.
